On Tuesday, minutes before 5pm ET, Haiti was hit with a major earthquake- we are talking a magnitude of 7.0; we are talking 10 miles outside the capital Port au Prince; we talking feeling it all the way in Cuba which is 200 miles away! At this time it is currently night so rescue efforts are at a bare minimum and phone lines are interrupted so many cannot be reached to verify safety…a frustrating and worrisome feeling for our friends and family in the states.
Haiti is not equipped (think heavy equipments, govt rescue teams) to handle such a catastrophe as it is the poorest country in the western hemisphere: 80% of the population falls below the poverty line vs. US of which 12 % of the population is below the line. Hard to wrap your head around it but it’s the hard truth.
It is still early so I won’t focus on the lack of media tv coverage from other news network (Thank you CNN and NPR) or absence of international aid from other countries (Thank you US for publically proclaiming your “full assistance”).
